My plugin does not show up in my DAW

Follow these troubleshooting steps if your Expressive E plugin doesn’t show or isn’t validated in your DAW.

Precautions for Mac users:
If you are on an Apple Silicon Mac (on M1/M2/M3 etc.), then the version you need to download and install depends on how you launch your DAW:
If you launch your DAW natively, use the MAC ARM version. If you are launching your DAW with Rosetta for compatibility reasons with older third-party software, use the MAC INTEL version despite being on an Apple Silicon Mac.

1. check installation and compatibility

After installing the plugin, the plugin files must be present in the following folders:
Mac: Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and /VST3
Win: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3

2. verify license activation

The plugin license must have been activated on your computer (or optionally on a connected iLok dongle) with PACE iLok:
Activating the license of your instrument plugin
If you did not see the activation window that should have popped up when launching your DAW for the first time after plugin installation, please use the dedicated iLok License Manager application to activate the plugin license:
Activating your instrument plugin with iLok License Manager

3. avoid compatibility issues of the licensing system with your computer

To cater to recent operating system or hardware changes, it’s a good practice to always have the newest PACE License Support installed on your computer. You can download it from www.ilok.com. Once installed, you can also update via the Help menu of iLok License Manager ("Check for application updates")

4. reboot your computer

Sometimes, due to caching, a reboot is required for a recently activated plugin to appear in the DAW.

5. rescan the plugin with your DAW's plugin manager

Open your DAW. If the plugin was not validated during its launch, go to the DAW’s plugin manager or plugin settings, and rescan your plugins manually. If the specific plugin already appears in the list but is marked as non-compatible or unvalidated, you can reconsider it individually rather than performing a full scan. Find below links to the official instructions on how to manage plugins in the most popular DAWs with MPE support:

Ableton Live
Bitwig Studio
Logic Pro
Steinberg Cubase/Nuendo
PreSonus Studio One / Fender Studio Pro
Cockos Reaper

6. force reconsideration of the plugin

In some tricky cases, it can help to force your DAW to reconsider a plugin by temporarily removing its file and then re-adding it:

 - Navigate to the plugin folders with Finder or Explorer:
Mac: Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components and/or …/VST3
Win: C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
 - Move the plugin file(s) out of that folder temporarily, e.g. to your Desktop
 - Launch your DAW so that it notices the files are no longer there
 - Quit your DAW after it has launched fully
 - Move the plugin file(s) back into the original folder
 - Launch your DAW again. The DAW should now consider the plugin file as being newly installed and hopefully validate it.
